Designing for the gate: building the Gatekeeper app
The hardest interface we build is not the dashboard a facility manager uses at a desk. It is the one a guard uses at a gate — in direct sunlight, sometimes in the rain, often with one hand, with a queue forming behind every second of hesitation.
One decision, made obvious
Everything in the Gatekeeper app collapses to a single, unmissable signal: a clear green “verified” or a clear red “deny,” with the reason stated plainly. No menus to navigate, no ambiguity to interpret. The guard scans, sees the decision, and acts.
- High-contrast states designed for outdoor screens.
- Large, glove-friendly touch targets that never fall below 44px.
- Offline-first: a queued decision still works when the network drops.
Good security technology disappears into the workflow it serves. The best compliment the Gatekeeper app gets is that nobody at the gate talks about it.
